All students who attend the University of Kentucky know how research is the important part of their academic program. The same case is with soil and horticulture science. Nowadays, farmers use too many chemicals on their crops and land to maintain steady production. While this can be beneficial for them, people who are eating such food, may suffer from long term consequences. This is one of the reasons why they often choose organic food. But, not many people don’t have means to buy organic food considering it’s expensive.
At the University of Kentucky, College of Agriculture food and environment, students, and teachers have a different approach. They want to create a positive impact on our planet and make better condition so we could grow healthy food. The important role plays a structure of the soil and student together with the teacher are looking for the ways to improve a different soil science. Through a series of research, they want to provide valid evidence, which will help the farmers grow their crops without disrupting the natural balance.
Considering the research part, every student is matched with a professor who is his mentor. Each group has different assignments, and they need to develop every project. This process prepares students for related science fields and eventual careers in research. Students have an opportunity to perform experiments in a lab, as well as on a farm where they will practice a diverse soil science, plant pathology, botany, microbiology, genetics and ecosystems management.
This is a great opportunity for them to acquire all the necessary knowledge and to apply it in practice. After all, they are studying here to become scientists one day and to healing properties of the land. Unfortunately, the soil is not a renewable resource, and we need to pay close attention to it. If we don’t take all necessary means to keep it healthy, we will soon die from hunger because it won’t be possible to produce food anymore. One of the goals of this department is to improve the quality of the land, without using harsh chemicals.
